The Story of Our Tartan

At the July 2000 board meeting held at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in North Carolina it was proposed by Bob McWilliam (Director Emeritus) that a tartan be designed for Scottish Heritage USA to celebrate the 35th year of its inception. Renowned tartan designer, Dr Philip D. Smith Jr., was commissioned to design the tartan under the guidance of members Cornelia Groves, Mary Hamilton and Mary Maclean. The final design was registered (#4106) with the Scottish Tartans Authority in Scotland and later transferred to The Scottish Register of Tartans which was established by a Scottish Government Act in 2008.

As with many Corporate tartans each color chosen for the design had a specific significance.

The mountains’ black silhouettes, stark against the glorious blue sky, are reflected below in the deep blue of Scotland’s many lochs and the many green glens of the highlands and pastures of the lowlands.

The white overchecks are reminiscent of the winter snow on the mountains.

Purple denotes the ubiquitous heather growing wild throughout the highlands in the late summer months.

Red signifies the centuries of Scottish blood, shed for freedom.

The resultant design is one of beauty and hopefully will instill fond memories of our heritage and ancestors.
